I’ve read some fantastic reviews of Bob Dylans tour this year from music critics from the rolling stone magazine and the guardian. I’ve listened watched videos of him live on tour before the Liverpool Show and I’ve been nothing but impressed. The band sounds great and his voice is better than it’s been for 20 years.
The last few times I’ve seen Dylan it’s been in small venues such as the Manchester Apollo and the Royal Albert Hall. Dylan is much better suited for venues like this, the crowd is always sold out with nothing but pure Dylan fans and everyone has a fantastic night.
The issues with the arena tours, it attracts many casual fans who may not know much about how Dylan performance these days. Those same casual fans may only know the greatest hits collection which is a tiny fraction of the songs he’s produced over the past 50+ years. So straight away they won’t know the music he’s playing and won’t recognise the style that he does it. They then criticise the show with comments like, ‘I didn’t recognise any of the songs’ or ‘he didn’t speak to the audience. Comments that you won’t hear from a Dylan Fan because they know his song book and what he will and won’t sing live. Secondly, they know that if Dylan says anything other than the songs that he is singing, it could be a fantastic night!
But for all the Dylan fans who know Dylan’s work and his live band… the concerts at the Liverpool Echo Arena on the 8th of May was a great one! The setlist had a few old classics and plenty of his modern work of Tempest and his Great American songbook covers like Autumn Leaves (Frank Sinatra cover) and Old Black Magic. He also did Desolation Row which I’ve never heard him sang live. I’ve seen Dylan 9 times and this one the one track I really wanted to hear so I was very happy. My highlights where Highway 61 Revisited, Pay in Blood, Spirit on the Water, Love Sick, That Old Black Magic Long and wasted years and Desolation Row.
Overall, it was a fantastic gig for any Dylan fan and we hope that he tours again in the UK very soon, maybe in a smaller venue 🙂
